ABOUT BROOKE

Notice

With deep sadness and a very heavy heart, we share that Brooke Hospital for Animals (India), also known as Brooke India, has been forced to begin the process of closing its programmatic operations after 25 extraordinary years. This decision has been made after deep reflection and extensive consultation with all stakeholders.

Regulatory restrictions in India prevent continuation of the funding from Brooke, our holding company. Without the ability to receive funding, the organisation had to perforce wind up  operations in India effective 01 April 2026, The company will be dissolved in accordance with the Companies Act, 2013.

BROOKE INDIA

Brooke India, an affiliate of Brooke, is committed to enhancing the lives of working horses, donkeys, and mules in India. BI strives to create lasting change by addressing the needs of both the working equids and their owners. BI's programmatic approach focuses on two key aspects: improving equine health and welfare and developing the economic and social conditions of marginalised equine-owning communities. Brooke began its operations in India in 1999, initially as a mobile ambulance service providing free treatment to suffering animals. As its work expanded, Brooke Hospital for Animals India (BHAI) also known as Brooke India, was formally established as a Section 8, not-for-profit company after 2001. In 2012, the organisation shifted from a free-treatment model to a sustainable community-centred approach that empowers equine owners with the knowledge, skills, and resources to care for their animals independently. Since then, it has grown into a collaborative organisation working closely with equine-owning communities, government bodies, knowledge institutions, non-profit organisations, research agencies, and animal husbandry and rural development departments at both central and state levels.

Through its advocacy efforts and engagement with national and state governments, BI has successfully integrated an equine welfare-centric approach into India's livestock and animal welfare policies.

2016: Enhanced compensation for euthanasia of Glanders-affected equines

2016: Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) issued guidelines for veterinary, farriery services, and               management at equine fairs

2022: AWBI issued welfare guidelines for working equines in brick kilns

2023: Uttar Pradesh Livestock Development Board included equine medicines and vaccines in                        government veterinary hospitals

2023: Animal Husbandry Department advised using small tags and microchips in equines and is                    considering subsidizing microchipping

2023: BI initiated subsidised equine insurance in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh

2024: The Uttar Pradesh government issued Glanders-free certificates for transported equines                      due to BI’s advocacy

Our Mission_.png

Our mission is to achieve immediate and lasting positive change to the lives of working horses, donkeys and mules and the communities that depend on them.

Our vision is of a world in which working horses, donkeys and mules are free from suffering and have a life worth living.

BROOKE THEORY OF CHANGE

Our Theory of Change is how we believe change happens in the world.

In order to sustainably improve equine welfare, we recognise the complex interaction between the equine, the equine-owning communities, and the system within which they co-exist. We believe that change in human behaviour needs to happen at all levels in order to achieve transformational change for the equines and the communities that rely on them for their livelihoods.
