OUR WORK

Brooke India (BI) is dedicated to fostering lasting change in India by addressing the needs of working equids and their owners. This includes enhancing equine health and welfare through financial support, sensitisation, and training for owners to adopt proper animal management practices.

Details of our work may be seen at the Global Brooke India Page. â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹â€‹

India at a glance

India is a middle-income country with a population of 550,080 working horses, donkeys, and mules, according to the 2019 census. Indian equine owners belong to the poorest and most marginalised of communities in India. Most of them rely on these animals for their livelihoods and survival. They face numerous economic challenges and struggle to make ends meet.

BI is actively engaged in 33 Equine Welfare Projects (EWPs) across 11 States and Union Territories. Through these projects, BI is making a direct impact on approximately 179,639 working equines belonging to 71,934 equine owners. Additionally, BI extends its reach indirectly to a broader population of equines through equine trade fairs, extension, and advocacy initiatives.

CONTEXT OF WORK

BI has interventions in each of the following contexts where equines are used by their owners for labour-intensive work to earn a livelihood.
